Here is what you will learn in your first class:

  • Kayak Fit and Gear Selection
The most important thing in kayaking is comfort! We will discuss ways that you can outfit your kayak, how to adjust the adjustments, and what the difference is between the kayak hulls .
  • Trip Planning
Any time you embark on a paddle, having a plan is critical.
  • Kayak Strokes
Yes, you will need these! But more important, you will want to know how to do these with finesse and efficiency. Kayaking is a core muscle sport, proper training is essential to maximize the power of each stroke.
  • Bracing and Edging
While not always an easy part of kayaking for a beginner to learn, bracing and edging will be introduced so that you can practice on your own.
  • Kayak re-entry (self and assisted)
Well, capsizing your kayak is possible, and getting back in is pretty important. This is the part of the class where you will be getting wet. We will teach you the wet-exit, self re-entry, and assisted re-entry. This is an easy skill when practiced in a controlled environment.
  • Surf Zone Entry and Exit
Some of the most exciting moments in kayaking take place in the area we call the surf zone. Our instructors will take you through the steps of getting in and out of this area.

Our Instructors: All of our instructors have participated in ACA and BCU instructor training courses. We focus on positive feedback because we really do want you to learn.

Duration: This class generally takes about 4 hours to complete, we will stop for lunch at the beach along the way to recharge our batteries!

Pre-requisite: You must know how to swim!
